A bit of geeky subculture, to lighten the tone around here somewhat.
Himself, the Feminist Househusband, loves Star Trek and one of our new TV channels shows The Original Series (TOS) and The Next Generation (TNG) almost every day.
A few days ago, the announcer before the show said 'Next, the crew of the Enterprise encounter a planet run by women... but all is not as wonderful as it first seems'.
Good gravy, I said to myself, I'm not sitting here watching Shatner bed dozens of dictatorial Amazons. Thankfully, it was TNG, so the episode was mostly about touchy-feely issues of personal sovereignty. And Ryker having sex with a dictatorial Amazon, but I can put up with that.

So will feminist Househusband be dragging you to the new film in May?
Ah, he won't have to drag me, I am quite curious as to where they take it! I have a fear in the pit of my stomach it could be glossed-over sexism, or worse, glamourised 1960s-style chauvinism and racism. Cause nothing's funnier than the way white dudes used to be able to talk about women and black people! But maybe it won't be. I'd like to see a takedown of the inexcusable aspects of Shatner, but we'll probably have to settle for a surgical removal of the worst bits.
My money's on the role of Uhura being beefed up, and perhaps treating Kirk badly herself, so that audiences can make the comfortable conclusion that there's no sexism, they're both as bad as each other! How convenient.
It'll be interesting to see how they go.
I'll be lining up as well.
The glee for the retro sexism was all over the American version of "Life on Mars" which I saw was just recently cancelled.
The episode I caught had plenty of woman hating and yet not once did I hear the cops use any racist slang or comments, even though that would have fit the era.
